Aug 22, 2017 · If Plex keeps buffering, try lowering the transcoder throttle buffer to allow Plex to stream the data closer to real-time. The default Plex transcoder throttle buffer setting is 60 seconds. Make a note of this in case it has no effect and you need to revert the change back. For example, to direct play that previous “3.5 Mbps average bitrate” file: an app that has a large buffer might only need ~5.4 Mbps of bandwidth to ensure smooth playback. a different app with a smaller buffer might need ~8.4 Mbps of bandwidth because the smaller buffer can’t tolerate spikes as well.
Transcoding an audio stream is much less intensive than transcoding a video stream. However if you wish to change audio to aac you can use a program called ffmpeg. It is a cli utility and has aac built in, the code would look something like this ; ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -c:a aac -ac 2 -b:a 400k -c:v copy output.mp4

The amount of time that transcodes ahead is set under Settings, Server, Transcoder, Trancoder default throttle buffer. You have to show advanced settings to see this. I set mine to 480 seconds and can watch the transcode bar move out to that time then throttle itself until the video catches up.
