POGs were replaces with steel starting in 2000, so that won't be an issue. Once it has over 30-40k miles, it may need cam chain tensioner extenders, but that's an easy fix. The 95 and 96 models had a higher 1st and 2nd gear ratio than all others I believe. This is why the 95-96 models have a 16/46 sprocket and chain set were all others have a 17/42 set.

I had no problems riding it back to my house and even letting a friend on it to learn how to ride. After that, we turned the bike off to chit chat and we couldn't get it start back up. Just bought a 9,100 mile Vulcan 800, 2004. At first the engine was rough, have not been started in about 8 months. Took it home cleaned it up. The bike physically goes into neutral but will not start unless the stand is up and clutch in even when in nuetral. (Which I assume is due to the light being connected to the safety mechanism in the bike.)

I think the biggest issue is that most folks don't realize that the stator is only rated for 70 watts of additional load above stock.
