Each region has one flock per day, though some maps like Coastal Highway don't get any Ptarmigans, so don't bother hunting there. Good spots to check if you're based in Mystery Lake include the rocks opposite the Camp Office front door, the Forestry Lookout and the Destroyed Lookout.

Cache locations are showing up when the area is surveyed and before the note is found. They really shouldn't for this type of cache. I did the same thing with the stump in Coastal HIghway. Now you mention it, that's exactly what happened with my cache at Three Strikes. The icon appeared upon mapping, rather then upon finding the note.

Coastal Highway is fairly easy, besides the mobs of wolves down in the Town area and on the ice. But for truly new players, the pathfinding and landmarks are also easier in ML, not so many maze-like roads and looping ones that can have you going in circles for days.
