In Skyrim's Bodyslide you change the body by modifying high weight and low weight (that's why you have two sections of sliders). In the preview window there is a weight slider, sliders in the low weight category of the main window won't make any changes when the preview window's slider is at high weight and vice versa.

Using groups is more efficient but if you miss building something you can end up with invisible stuff or mismatch issues etc. so it is probably better to build all at once for you.
