I recently acquired a 1961 Marlin 39a, I sent it out to have a vibra peened name removed from the side of the receiver. I noticed when putting back together the serial inside the front of the receiver was 151. The serial number under the lever is U1029. Anybody run across this before? For the years 1973-2009/10 you subtract the first two digits of the SN from 100. 2009/2010 are an exception in that both years used 91 since Remington was moving the plant mid-2010. The white line spacer started in 1951. Your gun certainly must have a Ballard style rifled barrel if it does not have 16 lands and grooves that is found in the Micro-Groove barrel. The Ballard barrels have 6 lands and grooves.

I have a 39A with serial number 73123111 on the tang behind the hammer. The barrel is marked "The Marlin Firearms Co. North Haven. Conn. U.S.A. CAL. 22 S. L. & L.R. MICRO-GROOVE BARREL ORIGINAL GOLDEN-39A. It has the JM proof mark on the left side of the barrel just in front of the receiver. It has no safety, and is tapped for a scope.

Mine says No. 064xx on the top tang. With the large number made they were in the catalog for several years.
