Primarily studied via questions. Secondary resources were de Virgilio and Pestana's for Surgery, Case Files for OBGyn, FA for Psych, and Step-Up to Medicine for IM. Practice questions were sufficient for Peds and FM. Got 80+ percentile on every shelf, only used uworld and cheesy Dorian deck.Initial stratification by more objective data like STEP 2 score, AOA/GHHS, class rank, research items, etc. will determine who gets an interview. Interviews are usually scored based upon social skills, interest in program, and overall demeanor/presentation. Remember that a lot of these programs get upwards of 3-4000 applications. I've read in a few places that the average time until interview invites is 2-3 weeks.

You have the best chance of matching at your home institution, and it so happens that the Top 20 medical schools also have the Top 20 IM programs, so clearly going into a Top 10/20 medical school is automatically a huge advantage. But there is also a lot of lateral movement at the top schools.I think this is true for people coming from non top-tier med schools, but there’s more leeway if you’re coming from a prestigious med school. I know lots of people who were non AOA (some top schools don’t even have AOA) and <250 step 1 who matched at BWH/MGH, especially in internal med since it’s a less competitive specialty.I gotta say... I like BB medicine but this beginner program isnt impressive. I guess all beginner programs arent special.
