H870 by itself in a 45-70 only manages about 900 fps. With 5 grains of 4759 or similar you can get about 1200 fps and a lot less unburnt powder being thrown around. Jun 21, 2006 · I use H4198 behind a 405 gr. Remington, somewhere around 47.5 grains gives 1,861 fps from my 22" inch barrel. This load is fast enough, very accurate, and gives no pressure problems IN MY RIFLE! I think IMR-4198 is a little faster so you should find specific load info for it. Pretty good powder for the .45-70 IMHO.

RayA - 2400 powder is at the top of my reloading data lists for the 45-70, so it's not a strange powder to use for cast bullets in that caliber. 491 posts · Joined 2006. #1 · Aug 18, 2010. I have a new TC Contender 45/70. I shot some of my reloads that are in the "trapdoor" load range through it. A BTB LFN 405 gr over a good dose of 3031. The recoil was more than a little "snappy", more like "brisk" and exhilarating to say the least. In my Marlin 1895 the same load is pretty "snappy".

I love RL7 for all the same reason's Starrbow mentioned, but H4198 is a real good one as well. H322 has a very good following and is very accurate. I really haven't found a bad powder in my 45-70 yet.. Good thing is everything that works in the 45-70, will work excellent with the 444 Marlin you'll eventually have to have! HA! The .454 Casull had a load of 28.5 gr of H110 for a 300 gr JFP bullet, but showing 44.2K of pressure. The .475 Linebaugh had a loading of 27.0 gr for a 385 gr cast LRNFP at 45.3K pressure. A 420 gr cast LRNFP had 25.0 gr with 36.7K pressure.
