The Builds: A Pathfinder Ranger has two mechanical options, the "archery" path and the "Two weapon fighting" path, but when it comes to optimization, these actually aren't your best build-theme options. I think from an optimization standpoint there are two viable Ranger Styles if you aren't multiclassing, and neither are two weapon fighters.

Lean towards a higher-DEX one if you're concerned about combat utility--they get better AC and therefore a bit better survivability in the long haul! A ranger with a two-hander can probably benefit from the Mauler archetype at level 2, though it's not necessary. Precision edge is already a great start to a one-hit-per-turn concept!
