When you get on top of a Z, sometimes you end high up in the air and can't do a head hit. Downed Z = Z that wont attack you = great = you can fight with light armor with which you can move more and faster while using less stamina. I don't recall if one option is a better choice since you can use the notes to craft a mastery book, or use the same number of notes to craft 10 skill points.
