If I hit the rear diff switch the REAR DIFF light goes out and then ABS and SLIP come on. I can hear the 4wd engage both high and low when I turn it on with my door open.

this fixed the reving problem. i drove it about 15 miles after that. stopped, got gas and put air in the tires. the SES VDC off and SLIP lights came on shortly after. drove about another 5 miles to my next destination and shut the X down. it took a while to start it up again. every time i start the X it turns for about 5secs before starting.

Intermittent abs, vdc and slip lights after hitting a bump suggests loose or poor connections somewhere in the wheel speed sensor circuit. I'd check all the connectors from the FR (front right) wheel speed sensor back to where they end.But the ABLS still kicks in with the VDC off and can be way too sensitive. You get the same SLIP light and braking. It's not really that you're not slipping at all, but it's an imperceptible traction loss that a very sensitive sensor is picking up--assuming it isn't malfunctioning. My Xterra. What I have seen on the xterra is the steering angle sensors out of adjust, this will turn on the lights. You will have to reset with the nissan scan tool, for center wheel adjustment setting.
