The Black Ant armor bonuses are actually pretty bad. Koi armor provides less defense than Black Ant but the bonuses are much better. Ladybug armor is also a good Tier 2 armor and is very defensively oriented. I think Koi and Ladybug can compete with the Tier 3 armors, Black Ant not so much.

Had no problem running through the anthill yesterday in full ant armor. However, I noticed a couple worker ants out in the world attacking me unprovoked, which, I think, should not happen. I was not wearing ant armor then, so I can't be sure, but maybe they would have attacked me even with it and this was also your problem.
Bone spear is easily the best t2 weapon vs black ants so you should be good. Maybe get lady bug armor and upgrade to a black ant shield go to pond dome for the 30 beefy smoothies since they heal twice as much, make them fuzz on rock or green machine.
