Oct 12, 2023 · Some 124 gr 9mm ammo has a very low MV, and some MV are up there with the fast 115 gr ammo, and this is also the case for the 147 gr 9mm ammo as well. In my ballistics file, I show that some of the 124 gr 9mm ammo has a MV of only 1050 fps, which produces only 304 ft. lbs. of Muzzle Energy (ME – the power rating).
Compared to a fairly standard 9MM (none +p so not even the most it can be) 115 grain bullet at 1,114 fps using 5.3 grains Ramshot Silhouette. Recoil impulse = (115×1,114+1.75x1,114×5 4)/225,400 = .65 Fairly mediocre 115 grain at .65 vs the 65 grain +p at only .63. 115 grain has the higher impulse. Dec 1, 2023 ... FWIW--I started with 124gr then gave 500 147gr a go, thought they made the slide feel sluggish, so I went back to 124gr, saw the 135gr got 500 of them shot'em and really liked them. The 135gr shot as accurate as the 124gr, the recoil felt softer, and the slide felt fast enough.

(using both WWB and federal) I carry the 124 gr speer gold dots (the P+ 1150 fps version, not the 1080) as a carry load. 147’s are usually sub sonic which is quieter when suppressed. Beyond that I just generally don’t use 115. I prefer 124gr nato for general fmj range use (the recoil is closer to actual defensive loads). For defensive loads I always go for more penetration, nowadays there’s lots of good 124-147gr defensive loads that get 16-18 inches ...
